Working aminals have been with man for as long as he can remember. The cave man era is thought to have trained the early forms of domastic dog to aide him in hunting and gathering. My involvement started in the mid seventies while on active duty with the US Army. My initiation was with the Military Police and the use of Canines. The military used and to this day use canines in a verity of manners. For patrol work, drug detections,physical security post,tracking,searching and handler protection. The animals have been used in every conflict sense world war II. Not only did the US military use canines but so did several of our allies , the British was the most noted trainers and handlers. When somone envisions the use of police dogs in the US by police they tend to remember the film clips of southern police confronting civil rights protesters. This is a poor example of the use the real use of police canine. A properly trained animal is a joy and pleasure to have in your house hold. In training our animals we fail to take the time and patients to fully instruct the animal in what we expect of them. I feel my greatest advantage in the training of dogs where for police work or for a pet in our home, is the ability to work from a level that they understand . Not to give human qualities to the animal behavior. Its the ability to use their animal behavior to form the actions and responses that we want learned. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
